Verbal vs. Nonverbal

Wit in conversation is, in the midwives ' phrase, a quick conception and an easy delivery. However, there is another kind of conversation which does not use words--nonverbal communication--and it is born out in many countries. Nonverbal communication can be classified into four aspects: gestures, facial expressions, eye contact and space; but people from different cultures have different frequency in using those four interactions. In my personal opinion, Chinese people express emotions and attitudes by using gestures and eye contact more than using facial expressions; on the other hand, Americans seem to use all kinds of nonverbal actions in daily conversation. For instance, you can easily find a “poker face” in China, because Chinese was taught to be stereotype and socialized, so that they can face different people by using the same small. In addition, for being polite, Chinese people will look directly at the other’s eyes when they have a one on one discussion. There are similarities between these two cultures, such as they use almost the same gestures to mean the same things. At the same time, Americans are more comprehensive than Chinese people in using nonverbal interactions. The reason is that Americans are more out-going and open, and Chinese people are much more traditional. As Deena R. Levine and Mara B. Adelman says, “Whether we emphasize differences or similarities, the ‘silent language’ is much louder than it first appears”. (Page 347)

Writing Assignment #2---Option 2

Since I've read From the First Four Minutes, I start to acknowledge the path to communicate with people and the way to be a sociable person. However, not every culture has the same rules for being interacting well with people in the first four minutes. In China, because of the traditional philosophy, people hardly show their emotions quickly and easily. Specifically, for those Chinese who were born before 1990s, they often hide their negative emotions and not to be demonstrative with someone who they lately know about in public. As we know, the famous Chinese action while two people first meeting is shaking hands. After that, they are going to greet each other for about few minutes, which are also called lay it on with a trowel. In other words, it seems just like fake smiles and all kinds of good words. Unless people know each other for a long time, it means that they are getting much closer to the others; people begin to share their happiness and sorrow. Moreover, we can rarely find even a couple kiss in public in China, because this behavior is considered unpleasant by Chinese culture. In fact, a Chinese couple can be very demonstrative with their dear in a foreign country. It is just in case that not to be too open under Chinese environment.

Formal or Informal?

I've read an essay named "Mother Tongue", and I found that there is a same situation in my life. I do use different phrases between family/friends and formal situations. It is just like my two introductions which I've posted. Initially, I may not use academic words or glossary in normal life speech. Moreover, grammatical well-fixed sentences are hardly found, either. I think we all have a kind of speach system which controls ourselves speaking, and it makes formal and informal situations difference. However, no matter what words we are using, communicating with each and making the others understanding are most important. Do you think so?

Introduce myself again to adapt to the requirement(formal)

Since I started my first blog in 2004, this is the forth blog which has been set up. Writing blog is becoming a piece of my life, and I am interested in writing words in either Chinese or English. I've been too long on my own. Everybody has a private world, where they can be alone. In the other word, my blogs are those private worlds.
Back to the topic, my name is Tian, however, I also got a name Orochi which come from a Japanese characters fighting game called “The King of Fighters 97”. Orochi is a kind of “bad person” in that game because he always wants to destroy the whole world and rebuild it. In personal, I don’t 100% agree the people who dislike Orochi because he just got beyond godlike abilities and was able to see the dirty much more clearly. Thus, I kept this one as my nick name.
I have many favorite subjects such as mathematics, Chinese and music. If you wanted me to pick a best one, I’d like to choose mathematics. For the great interested, I studied Olympic mathematics since I was in grade 2. Because of the percentage of mathematics using and having love for making money, I am in Finance & Economics double major now. In addition, I am not only interested in learning, but also active in doing sports. I achieved amateur skill level 2 certification of badminton form Chinese Badminton Association in junior school. And I was also doing well in speed roller-staking. I hope that we will have chance to play together.
Well, now you may know me somehow. I will very glad your words appear on my webpage soon.

Hi Mates!

Well, let me introduce myself first. My name is Tian, and u can also call me Orochi. U may feel strange that WTH a Chinese guy picked a Japanese name as his nicky name. The reason why I got this is that I'm a advanced player of a game which is called the King of Fighters 97, and Orochi is the final boss's name. I was born in Beijing in 1989. Do the math, then u will find out may age ^_^. I'm majoring Finance&Economy (double major). That means I'm gonna become a investor in the future just as I hopped. In addition, I'm not only interested in finance, but also in almost all kinds of sports. Roller skating and badminton are my 2 favourite sports. If we have chances to do sport, I'd like to play with u. I guess that's all I wanna say~
